Project description
This project involved creating a realistic 3D model of a lifeboat using SolidWorks, intended for use in marine design portfolios and visual presentations. The goal was to capture external detail and proportions accurately and present it through high-quality rendered images.
Timeline:
Delivered in 5 days, including modeling, surface refinement, and photorealistic rendering.
Background:
Lifeboats are essential elements in marine safety systems. This model was commissioned to visually represent the design and external features of a standard enclosed lifeboat, ideal for technical and promotional use.
Process
From research to rendering, the process focused on replicating visual accuracy and engineering realism in a clean, presentation-ready format.
Research & Planning
Collected reference images and dimensional guidelines from real enclosed lifeboat standards (SOLAS). Identified major structural elements like the hull, hatch, seating cover, and railing.
Modeling
Built the lifeboat in SolidWorks, maintaining curvature accuracy and surface continuity. Focused on capturing subtle details like vent grilles, access hatches, and fastening zones.
Rendering
Used PhotoView 360 to render the lifeboat in multiple lighting environments, highlighting body contours, materials, and color variations suitable for a ship safety catalog or engineering deck plan.
Solution
The final model was delivered as high-resolution renders in neutral and realistic backgrounds, optimized for client presentations and marine safety visualization.
Realistic Exterior
Accurate proportions and visual elements true to industry-standard lifeboat designs.
Clean Rendering
Soft lighting, marine color palettes, and technical viewpoints provided clarity and aesthetic appeal.
Portfolio-Ready Delivery
Prepared for immediate use in brochures, presentations, or online portfolios.
Results
User Retention
Visitors spent 30% longer on the lifeboat project page compared to other portfolio items, drawn by the clean design and vibrant renders.
User Satisfaction
Client feedback praised the model's clarity and realism, noting it as “perfect for marine training and promotional use.”
Engagement
Render posts received above-average interaction across portfolio platforms, leading to a noticeable spike in marine-sector modeling inquiries.
Conversion rates
Following the release of this project, marine-related inquiries—especially lifeboat and ship accessory modeling—saw a 17% rise due to the professional and polished visual quality of the renders.
Growing User Base
The lifeboat project attracted new visitors from marine engineering forums and LinkedIn, expanding the CAD portfolio’s reach into the maritime industry and safety equipment sectors.
